In his latest release “Guapito, Divino,” Miguel St. Michael continues to push cultural boundaries in Latin music by crafting a queer Tejano romance sparked by cumbia’s allure. The new single captivates audiences with its unique fusion of traditional cumbia rhythms, modern club beats, and a fresh perspective on love.
In his lyrics, Miguel St. Michael writes a tale of attraction provoked by infectious beats of cumbia, despite one’s self-awareness of being “Guapito” and “Divino,” inspired by the words said by Juan Gabriel in his infamous interview with Fernando Del Rincón. “If you feel that cumbia rhythm running through your body and can convey that passion on the dance floor -that to me is sexy. This is what ‘Guapito, Divino’ is all about.”
The song was accompanied by a music video short film, directed and produced by Miguel St. Michael, which was funded in part by the Austin Live Music Fund. The short had its pre-screening at The Coral Snake in Austin, Texas on January 19. This included performances by FRSH LMN, Miguel St. Michael, Exromantika, and DJ Prissy P. “I produced my first music video and documentary when I attended La Joya High School, and ever since I’ve been passionate about visualizing my songs through film.”
Texas couple Giovannie Mendoza (Odessa, TX), and Robert Vela III (San Antonio, TX) star in the short film music video that beautifully captures their chemistry and passion.
“When my choreographer Adrian Flores mentioned creating a narrative centered around a real gay, Latino couple from Texas, I knew sharing Robert and Giovannie’s story could inspire others and save lives.”
