On his forthcoming album, “Peace With a Lion,” Guatemalan-born singer-songwriter David Lindes reconnects with his own voice after a traumatized childhood and discovers unconditional love upon the birth of his first child.
On a deeply bicultural album that draws inspiration from folk styles throughout the Americas, Lindes tells stories of healing. He looks unflinchingly at childhood wounds and walks his listeners toward discovery and self-compassion. Equal parts Cat Stevens and Silvio Rodriguez, his lyrics are rich and literary, delving into life’s biggest questions with the help of folk, blues, and Caribbean elements.
Lindes recently returned from Mexico City, where he hosted the first of a string of launch events for his album. In a spiritual wellness center deep in an evergreen forest bordering the city, he took the stage to perform intimate, spare arrangements of his songs on guitar and share the life stories behind them.

Felix Contreras, from NPR Music, has said about Lindes’ efforts on the album, “He’s offering up his healing, out to the world, for all the healing we need to do right now.”
“Learning to Scream” uses searing Rock elements to document a thrilling moment of discovery. After a traumatic childhood in which he learned to obsess over the feelings of others to stay safe, he reconnects with his own emotions, soul, and voice.
“Señal,” which means sign in Spanish, in sharp contrast, is a lilting lullaby about his oldest child’s birth, and how it helped him see, for the very first time, what unconditional love could be. “It was like seeing the face of God,” he marvels.
“These songs represent such different parts of my healing journey. In one, I discover pain and anger. In another, the greatest love I’ve ever known. Together, they show the courage healing requires, to face whatever we find in our search for peace.”
Grammy® Winner Alex Cuba describes his role in producing the album as “a huge responsibility to shine a light on David’s beautiful voice and message, especially in a time like today, when so many are looking for ways to heal their spirits.”
