Alex Lustig‘s new album, Fate (B-Sides), showcases the producer’s vast COLLECTION of ideas that form the ingenious foundations of his music.
Our introduction to Lustig’s music was through his song “Neo.” Whoa.
The hyperactive and hypersonic beat is overpowering and becomes hypnotic against the calm of NUMIN’s dreamy vocalizations. “The song’s title is a nod to SUMIN’s heritage with ‘neo’ translating to ‘you’ in Korean,’ they explain.
We love the contrast, the duality, the dramatic energy, and the zen. However, we do recommend your Alex Lustig listening experience begin with the song, “Snow In The Distance.”
About the song, they explain: “‘Snow In The Distance‘ is a consistent, resonant alliance between delicate synths and a grounded rhythm. The bass line acts as the track’s heartbeat, pulsing solidly throughout the duration of the song, while mystically airy tonal melodies rise and fall.”
Press release
Producer Alex Lustig dropped a new LP: Fate (B-Sides). This is the second full-length release from the Belgium-born Toronto-based artist, following the release of Fate in 2022, and this sophomore endeavor delves deeper into Alex’s exploration of dreamy and atmospheric sounds.
The eleven-track LP project, meant to be a more upbeat spin on Alex’s usual serene fusion sound, is an amalgamation of hypnotic rhythms, soothing beats, and mesmerizing synths, blending together to create a sonic environment that is equal parts tranquil and enticing.
Alex says this about the project:
“‘Fate’ is a project about self-love, finding yourself, going through traumas, anxieties, happiness, sadness, and all the emotions and experiences we face as humans in our lifetime. Fate is your destiny. As I grow I believe everything I go through has its purpose in my life and personal growth. It’s all part of my destiny. This album is inspired by all these thoughts.”
On “Neo,” a collaboration with South Korean R&B artist SUMIN, Alex experiments with contrast and form. The track’s frenetic BPM paired with SUMIN’s vaporous vocals is simultaneously turbulent and calming, like falling down a rushing waterfall before landing in a depthless pool of sound.
The darkly sublime “Fade” sees Alex team up with London singer Sølv to create a club track that is equal parts transcendental and obscure. The track opens with a metronomic thrumming bass line before Sølv’s ghostly vocals and atmospheric synths enter, creating an all-enveloping aural experience.
“Void” is the ethereal closing track to the LP, utilizing celestial synths and clear, bell-like tones to create an atmosphere of serenity and light. Lustig’s simple but poignant production style creates a sort of sonic bubble, encasing listeners in pure, radiant sound.
