“Traditional Honduran music with rhumbas, Los Lobos-inspired rock,
and south-of-the-border soul.” – Illinois Entertainer
What a delight to begin this year’s musical journey with the premiere of “Pero te olvidare” by Chicago-based band Radio Free Honduras. This new single will be included on the band’s upcoming full album, Ámemonos, which translates to “Let’s Love Each Other.” We are thrilled that this group of musicians continues to showcase and put a spotlight on music sensation Charlie Baran, all the while championing Latine music.
We are fascinated with the story of how Radio Free Honduras came to be. Dan Abu-Absi, longtime guitarist for JT and the Clouds and Birds of Chicago, was so intrigued with singer-songwriter and bandleader Charlie Baran, that he decided to form a band to support his artistic endeavors. He explains this beautifully on the band’s website writing, “Charlie Baran is a true virtuoso. No one sees him perform without recognizing the presence of a true master – an heir to a rich tradition of Honduran music, as well as a guitar-slinging showman and a gifted songwriter whose skill transcends all genres. But throughout most of his career, he has existed in the shadows – until the formation of Radio Free Honduras.”
Charlie’s talent and songs are given the wide musical spectrum they deserve by this impassioned ensemble.
Before making his home in Chicago, Charlie was creating music with the legendary group Banda Blanca, known for their chart-topper “Sopa de Caracol” in his home country of Honduras.
This Chicago Tonight segment offers a glimpse into Baran’s history and continuing musical legacy…
Radio Free Honduras’ live shows include many of Baran’s original compositions along with a broad range of creatively reworked cover tunes.
